We are all deeply connected to the most important people in our lives through music. Whether or not a song has been life changing for us, or if it’s just a silly memory that makes us laugh, music is one of the most beautiful things in our universe.
The internet has become a bittersweet part of music today. The angel part is that it makes it more available. It makes some things more possible. Artists who will never otherwise be heard beyond their local scene can be discovered by people across the world. Bands who will never be signed can market their songs and cds on their own. We can find music we never would have known existed.
But there is the devil part of it too. To us it feels like something genuine gets lost in all the “marketing” artists have to do to compete against the massive sea of other artists. Liking a song sometimes has less to do with the song and what it means to people, and more to do with whether or not an artist talked to them on a website, or was available to their fans on a social level, or whether or not a band is following certain trends and dressing a certain way. Or as a fan, there are suddenly these rules as to what you are allowed to like. You can’t like “this band” if you don’t fit into “that crowd”. There is something about having a “music scene” that categorizes us, labels us, limits us, divides us, and ultimately takes the magic out of the music.
We wanted to create a place that embraces the music, and the feeling of the song. A place for the songs you put on repeat for hours at a time, the songs that make you cry, that give you chills, that make you think of your best friend, or your sister, or brother, or your favorite day. The songs that pick you up off the floor when you feel like you may never be able to move again. The songs that make you want to take on the world.
We wanted to create a place where the beauty of sharing music is celebrated. No matter who you are, you are free to like what you like for whatever reason you choose. No matter how “indie” a song ranks, or how “uncool”, or “mainstream” and “overplayed” a song is, we wanted to give the power back to the song and what it means to us, and create the soundtrack of our lives.
