I started dancing fairly young… 5 or 6. It was something my mom started me in, along with piano, tennis, private school, and everything else “young ladies” should be in. I took ballet, tap, and jazz. For years, dance class was just something I did because I was supposed to. I liked it, but I wouldn’t say I was passionate about it. It was just more classes I took in a childhood of classes. It was technical, and repetitive, and I really just wanted to get it done and go play with my friends. When other people talked about loving dance – I just didn’t get it.

When ‘So You Think You can Dance’ started, I watched of course, but in the same way I watched American Idol, or The Hills – it was Reality TV. Then season 3 came around, and in the first episode Lacey and Kameron came out and did a Mia Michaels contemporary piece to ‘Dancing’. My heart literally stopped. I cried, I couldn’t breathe, and 15 years of dance classes that never meant anything to me suddenly came crashing down. I finally got it. That’s what I was missing all these years. Feeling dance. I had spend countless hours going through the motions, and repeating the steps, but never connecting to the music.

After that episode, I signed up for a contemporary class. Even though I had years of training, this was a whole new type of dance that I knew nothing about. I wasn’t good. But, it was so beautiful because I was starting over. I was getting a second chance to fall in love with dance, and this time around, I “got it”. Now dancing is something I’m incredibly passionate about, and I’m obsessed with everything Elisa has ever released .
